Show Girl. Gay Icon. Disco Chick. First Lady of House. As probably Australia’s
most well known female DJ, Kate Monroe is known as a lot of things. Whatever it
is, one thing is for certain - this girl knows how to get the party started.
With a dedicated cult following around the country, Kate has been giving her
male counterparts a run for their money for the better part of a decade. This
consummate performer and one woman media machine knows exactly how to get what
she wants and is the perfect embodiment of the “Go Grrrrl!” ethos.
One of
the most in demand DJs in Australia, Kate always draws a crowd no matter where
she is playing. Her party credits read like a guide to the most legendary
parties in town. Kate has been a regular fixture at almost every large scale gay
and lesbian dance parties across Australian and New Zealand, including Sydney’s
legendary Mardi Gras, Sleaze Ball, Harbour Party and Melbourne’s Winterdaze, Red
Raw and Resurrection.
However, Kate is not just limited to the gay market
and her smooth, funky sounds have seen her play at various more mainstream
parties. For over six years Kate has been the resident DJ at Sublime at
Australia’s largest nightclub, Home. Every Friday night Kate drives over 2,500
dancers into collective ecstasy at the club night that has twice been voted the
Best Club Night in Australia at the national Dance Music Awards.
Kate is as
comfortable inside the dark of a nightclub as the open air at outdoor parties.
Kate was one of the headline DJs at the closing party for the Sydney 2000
Olympics in the Domain in front of a staggering 60,000 people. Kate has also
played at the outdoor new years day Field Day parties and supported most
international DJ legends when they tour, including Derrick Carter, Bob Sinclar,
Masters at Work, Victor Calderone, CJ Bolland and Erick Morillo.
Besides her
consistent and always entertaining sets, another aspect that sets Kate apart
from other DJs is the corporate sponsorship that she attracts. Kate’s latest
coup is her involvement with Shure – the manufacturers of high quality
cartridges. Kate recently signed a deal with the company to be the official
endorsee of the new Shure Whitelabel cartridge, a truly revolutionary piece of
DJ technology. Tailored for the club environment, Whitelabel features sonic
characteristics including solid drop bass, flat mids and accented highs. Perfect
for Kate’s club sound, whether it be the deeper side of house for smaller clubs,
to the more driving hands in the air style that she prefers for big venues. She
is also using Shure’s PSM 400, an in-ear monitoring system that allows her much
greater control over the mix in live situations.
Known as Australia’s First
Lady Of House, Kate’s distinctive style has lead to an extensive touring
schedule over the past five years around Australia and New Zealand that has seen
her add dancefloors full of fans with every club she plays at.
There’s one
sure fire way to tell if Kate Monroe is on the decks. Just look at the crowd. If
their hands are in the air, or there’s an ecstatic glint in their eyes, or their
body is grooving in time with the bassline, or especially if their smile is so
big it is threatening to overtake their ears, you can be certain that Kate
Monroe is behind the turntables.
